George Pataki, co-chair of the Coalition to Stop online Gambling, desires to run for president, but is he serious this right time and does he stand the possibility?
Former Republican New York Governor George Pataki, co-chair of Sheldon Adelson’s Coalition to Stop Internet Gambling, has announced which he is ‘seriously considering’ running for president in 2016.
Pataki dropped the bombshell this week within an meeting with the Boston Globe, following a ending up in supporters in New Hampshire.
His credentials for the post derive from the fact that he ‘successfully ran one for the largest and most complicated governments in the nation,’ he said. ‘And in a state that is blue’ he added triumphantly.
Clearly warming to their theme, Pataki later took to Facebook to declare: ‘we have seen an explosion in government power from Washington and the government is far too big, way too powerful, way too high priced and far too intrusive, and the need to reform Washington dramatically and reduce its energy and influence never been greater.’
Pataki was Governor of New York for three consecutive terms that are four-year is something of an anomaly within the Republican Party. As governor, he had been praised for his commitment towards the environment and expanding health care for poorer families.
He could be pro-abortion and generally known to own more moderate social views than most of their colleagues in the GOP, yet he is a passionately ‘small government’ Republican.
These apparently contradictory views extend to gambling too. Ironically, in 2001 the brand New York Times called Pataki ‘perhaps probably the most governor that is pro-gambling state has ever had.’ During his tenure the ny lottery nearly tripled its yearly revenue.
In addition to overseeing the expansion the state lottery he pressed for the development a fresh casino that is tribal western brand New York State, allowed slot machines to be installed in racetracks and was pleased to seek out gambling solutions to connect budget deficits.
However, his position on online gambling is unequivocal. ‘It’s within my interests to prevent gambling that is online exploding across this country,’ he told CNBC recently. ‘It will have a tremendously negative impact on families and on jobs.
From my standpoint we’m very concerned with the power of arranged criminal activity organizations and terrorist organizations, criminal businesses that are transnational, to move money and launder money.
It’s really a tremendous problem, it’s something the American people should debate before any modification is made, and I think it is simply unfortunate that it is now evidently legal plus some states are moving forward.
Pinch of Salt
‘You can’t protect the customer or the investor,’ he included. ‘To think that someone sitting around inside their home or their college dorm at 3 o’ clock within the morning after a night that is bad deciding to put every thing they have on double zero, to genuinely believe that’s a good concept makes no sense at all. It’s bringing gambling into people’s homes.’
The fledgling regulated online gambling into the United States should not be too worried, however. Pataki’s statement is being treated with a pinch of salt by many chapters of the press.
Having kept office in 2007, Pataki also ‘seriously considered’ operating for president in 2008 and 2012, but backed away.
Moreover, many commentators think he lacks title recognition to get elected, while many of his more liberal social views don’t sit well with his fellow Republicans.
They also question their capability to raise adequate funds to mount a fruitful campaign, although we imagine Adelson might be ready to spare him a dime or two.

PokerStars Sporting Future
Adding towards the brouhaha, PokerStars’ parent company Amaya has announced that it will briefly be adding a sports betting center to the PokerStars platform. The merchandise will be rolled out ‘in particular markets’ during the quarter that is first of year, with more to adhere to, the operator has said.
Amaya first announced its intention to include sports gambling to its portfolio in November last year when it began providing casino and table games on its PokerStars 7 client on a market-by-market basis, beginning with its Spanish-facing site. Amaya says it has seen a 30 percent cross-sell from its online poker player base into activities gambling in the debut Spanish market, exceeding objectives.
While it’s a natural progression for a company intent on dominating the global online gaming market, the present changes at PokerStars haven’t gone down well with poker players, who worry the addition of other gambling games may hurt the poker economy, as leisure players decide to fritter their bankrolls away on roulette and blackjack.
Poker Players Unhappy
Following a announcement of the casino games launch, Victoria Coren, a member of Team PokerStars professional since 2007, regretfully announced she would be severing her connections with the site, a move that received plaudits throughout the poker world.
‘… I cannot expertly and publicly endorse it, also passively by silence with my name still over the shop,’ she said. ‘Poker could be the game I love, poker is exactly what I signed up to promote. The question we’m most likely expected oftentimes in interviews is concerning the risk of addiction, going skint [broke] and so on. We’m always careful to describe the distinction involving the essentially fair nature of poker, where we all take each other on with the same fundamental chance, and those casino games at unfavorable odds which can be (especially online) so dangerous for the vulnerable or hopeless.’
Meanwhile, Amaya are going to be keeping a watchful eye on procedures in New Jersey. PokerStars is poised to enter the marketplace here, pending a bit more due diligence from the state’s regulator, and in the meantime, nj is continuing to fight the recreations leagues in a fight because of its right to offer sports gambling.
